Make Eastfield Green Again

With a focus on sustainability, these young participants didn’t just imagine a better community—they made it happen.

Hands-On Learning and Building

The project began with children exploring the importance of green spaces and sustainability. They then designed and built bird boxes and bug hotels, using real tools to bring their ideas to life. These creations now enhance the local environment and serve as proud symbols of the children’s hard work.

One mum shared, “She hasn’t stopped talking about the fact she’s built her very own birdbox from scratch and used proper tools to do it.”

Planning and Biodiversity

The children also created 3D models of proposed green spaces and researched biodiversity, learning how their efforts could benefit the local ecosystem. Their work in spatial planning tied in creativity with practical skills, making their community a meaningful space.

A Year 5 teacher noted, “Planning this space really helps link learning we are doing about biodiversity and the environment.”

A Community Transformed

This project has left a lasting impact on the children and their families, fostering a sense of ownership and pride in their community. One participant said, “My family can actually come to the garden and I can point at what I’ve done and say I made that.”

By involving children in the planning and creation of green spaces, this initiative is community-led and collaborative, placing local youth at the heart of environmental change in their area

Through this initiative, the children of Eastfield Estate have shown that even the smallest hands can bring about significant change, making their neighbourhood a greener, more vibrant place to live.
