Freedom Champions

In celebration of Hull's Freedom Festival, we invited young people from across the UK to explore the question:

"What does Freedom mean to you?"

Each participant captured photographs reflecting their personal interpretation of freedom, which were then used to create mosaics representing two 'Freedom Champions'—iconic figures who embody the spirit of freedom. The young people suggested and voted on these champions, ultimately selecting Bessie Coleman, the first Black woman to earn a pilot's license, and Ellie Simmonds, known for her dedication, commitment, and resilience.

These powerful images of 'Freedom' from young voices across the country came together in a visual tribute to these inspiring individuals.

This project engaged young people in artistic expression that reflected their perspectives, fostering a sense of agency and contributing to the cultural fabric of their community
